MikaDoesMakeup – Everyday Makeup Routine at The Studio by MikaDoesMakeup
Hi everyone, this is my everyday makeup tutorial recorded in The Studio by MikaDoesMakeup. Anybody who does their own makeup learns and picks up new techniques and secrets when it comes to applying their own makeup. These are my techniques, although I like to keep it simple because I am usually in a hurry (like most people) when I am getting ready in the morning! So here is my Everyday Makeup Look… Check it out!
MAC Brush Cannisters

MAC has come out with something pretty sweet… Other cosmetic companies have come out with similar products, although I am bias towards MAC so I’ve decided to highlight this new item. It’s a MAC Brush Canister where you can separate your various makeup brushes, adjust the size and keep dirty/clean brushes divided. The large brush canister is $30 and the small brush canister is $18. This is a great product if you travel with a lot of brushes or if you’re a makeup artist that likes to stay organized while on the job.
I know I’m buying one as soon as I get to the MAC store on Robson Street.

It’s hard to find makeup that can actually glow in the dark under UV lights, so it’s vital to purchase a specialized glow in the dark makeup. Luckily I purchased a 5 colour glow in the dark makeup kit at the IMATS (International Makeup Artist Trade Show) in NYC this past April which was a life saver. The glow in the dark makeup palette can pretty much only be used when mixed with water, which makes the consistency just right and spreadable and the colours are fabulously neon and bright, which stands out in any light.
On my Brazilian model, Marina, I started off by applying her moisturizer, primer, foundation and concealer (even though it was not necessary under the black lights)… Then I started to mix up the glow in the dark colours with some water. Using a fine pointed brush, I applied the eyeshadow in many different colours then brought it up over her brows and then on her ears. I made her lips a nice bright pink and applied some false strip lashes (that I painted fluorescent pink). With some extra water saturated on a fat fluffy eyeshadow brush, I splattered the glow in the dark makeup all over the right side of her face, neck and chest for some extra fun.
Voila! Glow in the Dark makeup!! The makeup glows only in a black UV light, especially in a super dark room. Check out the pics!

Beach photoshoot with model Klara and photographer David Dolsen
Klara was our model for photographer David Dolsen’s beach concept shoot at the end of Summer. She has beautiful light skin and large piercing green eyes… so for the makeup I used an Eminence Organics Tropical Vanilla Sun Cream, then a MAC skin primer for foundation prep. I then applied concealer to any uneven tones and airbrushed her colour of foundation all over her face and neck, avoiding her eye area. I used MAC’s paint pot in Painterly to prep her eyelids and mainly a burgandy shadow well blended with many light shades to soften the colour. Her skin was then sunkissed with an Eminence skin illuminator, her cheeks a peachy blush, her eyes enhanced with thick false strip eyelashes then finished off with a light lip gloss. Photographer David Dolsen chose Sunset Beach at English Bay in Vancouver for the background of the photoshoot. Stylist Joanna Keller threw a braid in Klara’s hair as well as put together the funky outfits with help from her partner store, MintageVintage.

Photographer David Dolsen organized this photoshoot with Cracked Wheat Golf Attire and brought MikaDoesMakeup to do the model’s makeup and Faye Smith to do the hair. The girls left The Studio in the early morning to make their way from Downtown Vancouver to White Rock to meet with David and the model for the Golf attire shoot. They had yummy scones and sandwiches for them with coffee and treats while they set up their stations for makeup and hair. MikaDoesMakeup applied a natural – sporty makeup and Faye created a couple of half-up half-down hairstyles and casual looks throughout the photoshoot.

Blogging for me has gone on the back burner for a little while as I have been quite busy doing some makeup for selective shoots, many weddings and mostly running The Studio by MikaDoesMakeup! I promise I will keep updating my blogs as much as possible… although it is extremely tough to stay up to date with all the events as they happen.
The pics above are from a shoot from about a month ago with one of my favorite photographers (David Dolsen) and a model whom I have wanted to shoot with for quite some time (Kate Calnin). Leah, one of The Studio’s talented hair stylists (also a mua) did Kate’s hair, while I did the makeup for this elegant style of photoshoot with designer Frederick Fung’s pieces for Kate to model. Every time I get together with David, we create magic. His photos are amazing, clean and crisp. Bright, fresh and stunning. He is a perfectionist. Below is a picture of Kate’s hair (by Leah). Fabulous.

Even if you don’t wear much makeup on a daily basis, you should definitely have your makeup done for your wedding day. Pictured above is Ashley, who is the owner of Stock Market at Granville Market (on Granville Island in Vancouver). She doesn’t wear much makeup and wants to look like herself on her wedding day. When Ashley came to me on the day of her engagement photos, we opted for a more lighter application of makeup so her hubby-to-be could still recognize her. I also wanted Ashley to feel comfortable in her own skin so she can feel relaxed while looking radiant and even more beautiful in the photos.
For her makeup we applied a flawless foundation and highlighter for her skin and darkened her eyebrows to match her natural hair colour. We went natural for her eyes and a bit darker for her lips with a berry gloss then finished off with some colour on her cheeks. Gorgeous and natural!

Bride Asha and her lovely wedding party got their makeup done by our bridal makeup team in her downtown Vancouver high-rise apartment. I applied a subtle smokey eye makeup on Asha and one of her bridesmaids while Faye did 3 of Asha’s other bridesmaids with equally beautiful subtle smokey eyes. All the ladies were happy with their makeup and looked absolutely gorgeous with their dresses on.

Meghan Church’s Wedding in Vancouver – by MikaDoesMakeup
Meet beautiful bride Meghan on her wedding day in downtown Vancouver. I did Meghan’s bridal makeup and one of her bridesmaids makeup while my makeup artist colleague (Brittany Gray) helped out with the other 2 bridesmaids. Meghan’s makeup consisted of bright pink blush, super long false eyelashes and pink lips. Her gorgeous blonde curled hair matched perfectly with her angelic makeup to complete her Bridal look. Since I’m always the one doing the makeup for models behind the scenes in photoshoots, I decided to try something fun and new. I wanted to actually try out being in front of the camera for once. I chose to go with photographer Karolina Turek because she was working closely with professional pinup retoucher Lisa Von Sturmer. Karolina takes amazing photos that shine you in your best light and Lisa can help to make you look exactly like a pinup from the 50′s. I had a lot of fun at Karolina Turek’s Vancouver photography studio and she made me feel extremely comfortable especially in my bra and panties. Karolina Turek is quick and to the point, she doesn’t waste any time shooting and usually all the pictures turn out fabulous with no retouching necessary.
